Piedmont's understated winner? The label boasts "Langhe Rosso," but in reality, as every year, the glass contains a downgraded Barolo and also Barbaresco. "Younger vines." For Roagna, that means under 25 years old. The grapes come from two vineyards with a high proportion of limestone in the marl soil, as well as sandstone.
Burgundy finesse meets Piedmontese climate. The bouquet alone is fantastically complex yet full of finesse. A touch of tar, intense limestone, and a hint of rusty iron, followed by sour cherry and sloe, black fruits, and dried rose petals. On the palate, it's pure, radiant, and grippy, with plenty of tannins that are wonderfully fine.
Medium-bodied, charming and full of finesse with orange peel and citrus aromas. A terrific bargain if you know the backstory. It's an open secret, though, and that's why this Langhe Rosso always sells out very quickly. It's basically a Roagna Barbaresco at an entry-level price!
