In 2000, Paolo De Marchi took over another winery, Villa Sperino in the village of Lessona, 20 kilometers east of the provincial capital of Biella. In doing so, De Marchi returned to the origins of his family's winemaking tradition, which had already owned the estate in the 19th century.
Even after ten years, the estate and its vineyards still look like an enchanted fairytale castle. More than 150 vintages of wine lie dormant in the wine cellars!!! In the old library, we found bundles of old labels wrapped up under several centimetres of dust, the oldest of which date back to 1865. We couldn't believe our eyes. Of the 40,000 hectares of vineyards that once existed in the region, only around 40 hectares remain today, the rest is completely forested. When walking through parts of the forest, the old vineyards were still very clearly visible.
Paolo De Marchi reactivated almost 10 hectares of land on the winery. Thanks to his know-how in terms of vines, varieties and soils, as well as the active support of his talented son Luca, the first grapes were vinified in 2004. The Uvaggio wines, which have their own DOC, consist mainly of the grape varieties Nebbiolo (called Spanna there), Vespolina and Bonarda. A delicious rosé wine called "Rosa del Rosa" is vinified from the young vines.
